Sigiriya - Dambulla

Cultural and Heritage

Sigiriya is an ancient rock fortress located in the central Matale District of Sri Lanka. It is also known as the Lion Rock due to the giant lion statue that once stood at the entrance to the palace on top of the rock.

The Sigiriya rock fortress was built in the 5th century AD by King Kasyapa as his palace complex. The complex includes a series of beautifully landscaped gardens, pools, fountains, and intricate water gardens that reflect the advanced engineering skills of the ancient Sri Lankan civilization.

At the top of the rock, there are the ruins of the palace complex, which include the king's throne, the royal audience hall, the bathing pool, and the royal chambers. The view from the top of the rock is breathtaking, with a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside.

The Sigiriya rock fortress is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered one of the most important historical and archaeological sites in Sri Lanka. It attracts thousands of visitors every year, who come to experience the unique cultural and architectural heritage of Sri Lanka.
